Portage Magazine is an online literary magazine run by Carroll University students who take the literary magazine publishing class. I was dubbed the "webmaster" for the Spring semester of 2018 and had the amazing opportunity to completely re-work the Wordpress website. Below are just a few screen grabs of pages I created and laid out.
When I started this project, many of the pages were inconsistent. The archive landing pages were simply pages of text links and not at all visually attractive.
First things first was putting my own personal touch on things. The image from the home page was actually one that I took at the Fox River in downtown Waukesha. I even used my handy-dandy Illustrator color picking tool and make sure the links on every page were a color straight from the image to add a sense of semblance to the overall appearance.
Another major task I assigned myself was to make the past years' pages consistent with what I envisioned for this year's layout. This included a lot of working with coding to make sure spacing was the same throughout and even came down to little things that make a big difference such as adding "back" links to every individual page.
When it came time later in the semester to add the accepted works to this year's issue, I had a template ready to go and all-in-all adding over fifty pages in a matter of a few hours went very smoothly with very few hiccups.
